Description
Limited to 150 copies printed on handmade paper, this is number 67. Includes a preface and Elliott Coues’ extensive Memoir of Zebulon Montgomery Pike. This is widely regarded - by Wright Howes and other historians - as the definitive edition. Pike led the first U.S. government exploration of the Southwest, following the Mississippi headwaters and crossing the plains of Nebraska and Kansas. Near present-day Larned, Kansas, he sent part of his party down the Arkansas River while he advanced into Colorado, discovering Pike’s Peak, Royal Gorge, South Park, and several passes. Crossing the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the upper Rio Grande, Pike and his men were captured by Mexican forces, later released, and returned to Louisiana in July 1807. Coues’ edition includes extensive annotations, commentary, maps, and a complete index, arranged in a consistent, authoritative format.
