Description
Complete first edition, no. 51 of 300 copies, with a wood-engraved dedication, 21 hand-coloured lithographed plates of birds, 23 photogravure views, and a colour map. Bound in modern brown buckram for the Zoological Society of London, with stamps to title-page and front endpaper. Crawshay’s six-month 1904 expedition to Tierra del Fuego, by accident rather than design, yielded a sumptuous natural history of this remote and little-known land. The book provides detailed accounts of the birds’ habitats, identification, and coloration, correcting widespread misconceptions about the region, and offering a vivid, authoritative portrait of a place rarely seen yet vividly brought to life through both text and illustration.
