Title
The Life of Aaron Burr
Author
Samuel L. Knapp
Year
1835
Publisher
Wiley & Long
Description
An exceptionally scarce first edition of the earliest full-length biography of Aaron Burr - Revolutionary War officer, U.S. Senator, and Vice President under Jefferson - published while Burr was still alive (he died in 1836). This copy bears a contemporary inscription, “Peter [middle name] Burr,” with a brief note reviewing the work, strongly suggesting a familial connection to the Burr lineage. Given the publication date, it is conceivable this book circulated within Burr’s own family circle, and may even have been gifted by Burr himself before his death.
Knapp’s pioneering biography was the first serious attempt to depict Burr as a multidimensional historical figure rather than the villain of partisan pamphlets, tracing his rise from Revolutionary service under Arnold and Washington to his duel with Hamilton and subsequent treason trial. The work laid the foundation for all subsequent Burr studies, notably Davis’s Memoirs (1836–37) and Parton’s Life and Times (1857).
290 pp.
Condition
Cover wear; spine with strong splitting and fraying. Text block with scattered foxing and light creasing; a few leaves with minor top-corner folds.
