Description
Signed Artist’s Proof, no. 20 of a limited issue, signed multiple times by William Anderson - denoting one of the earliest, personally reviewed impressions before general publication. Complete with 80 finely printed color and monochrome plates, this large folio represents Anderson’s landmark study of Japanese art, produced at a time when few Western scholars approached the subject with such rigor or sympathy. Anderson (1842–1900), a surgeon and anatomist turned art historian, lived in Tokyo during the early Meiji era, where he served as Professor of Anatomy at the Imperial Naval Medical College and immersed himself in Japanese artistic traditions. His pioneering research and vast personal collection - later forming the foundation of the British Museum and British Library’s Japanese holdings - secured his place as a bridge between Eastern and Western art history, and as one of the first Westerners to treat Japanese visual culture as a field of academic inquiry.
